Voluntary Industry Guidelines
Best Practices and Guidelines for Location Based Services
These guidelines were created with the strong support of CTIA's carrier members and approved by by the CTIA Board of Directors. They are based on the information privacy best practices promoted by the Federal Trade Commission, and the document follows the now familiar structure that includes Notice, Consent and Safeguards.
Consumer Code
All of the country’s major wireless carriers and most regional and local wireless service providers have committed to the voluntary “Consumer Code for Wireless Service.” It’s the industry’s effort to help consumers make informed choices when selecting and managing their wireless service. The Code’s signatories must adhere to its 10 points, including commitments to disclose rates, additional taxes, fees, surcharges and terms of service; provide coverage maps; make customer service readily accessible; and allow a trial period for new service.
Wireless Content Guidelines
To provide consumers with the information and tools they need to make informed choices when accessing content using a wireless handset, CTIA and the participating wireless carriers have voluntarily adopted the following Guidelines for Carrier Content Classification and Internet Access (“Guidelines”).
Wireless Content Guidelines Classification Criteria
Mobile content will be classified as Restricted Carrier Content or Generally Accessible Carrier Content based on existing criteria used to rate movies, television shows, music and games.
